So, you want the story of Peace of Thread? Here it is in bullet points:

  • Denise goes to the Middle East for 7 years, learns Arabic, works with a non-profit, and falls in love with the culture and people.
  • Meanwhile, stateside, a group of people called Generation Salaam (Arabic word for “peace”) are developing friendships with Iraqi refugees in Clarkston, Ga. Over the course of our friendships, it surfaces that their biggest need is jobs.
  • Denise comes home and meets one of these women and gives her an old sewing machine. This woman is thrilled and the story begins.
  • Shortly thereafter Generation Salaam does our annual summer camp for the kids and while the camp is happening, Denise and some other “Threaders” teach the women how to sew.
  • The women love it and want to continue beyond just the summer camp week.
  • We audaciously think we can start a business and give it a go.
  • After months of training, getting connected to fabric distributers, finding wonderful designers, and rounding up more volunteers – we find ourselves at the beginning of an adventure!
Now this is the very abbreviated version of the story. We will fill in the gaps along the way so check back in from time to time. Hope to see you soon.

Shopped with Peace of Thread today and yesterday at a holiday bazaar and this story truly stole my heart! What an amazing ministry for these refugee women who have suffered in ways we will never understand! The pictures of these bags don’t really do them justice because you just have to see the fabric and touch and feel it! They are all beautiful inside and out and each and every one is unique. I am just so excited that I could buy something so well made and know that God is a “peace” of each of these threads! Just pick one and order it, you WON’T be disappointed! Blessings to Denise and her ladies!
